Make this New Year Extra Strong
After an overindulgent December filled with mince pies, roast potatoes, the *odd* hangover and endless cheese boards; 2018 feels like the perfect opportunity to start fresh. From joining the gym to learning a new language, we’re all full of good intentions for the first few weeks of the new year, but where does all that motivation go come February?
Every year we say we’ll start doing this and stop doing that, but the trick is to follow some easy steps when setting your resolutions to make sure that they’ll last the whole 365 days and really improve your life.
Step 1: Be specific
While “Be more healthy” seems like a positive resolution, it’s also very broad, making it seem less feasible. Why not try “Eat at least 2 pieces of fruit every day”, or “Have a salad with every meal”? Having set goals will make the potential future ‘you’ seem a little bit closer to your reach.
Step 2: Make it count
Log your progress – seeing how far you’ve come since day 1 is a great motivator. You’ll be beating that personal best in no time!
Step 3: Make sure it’s achievable
This doesn’t mean that you can’t have a big goal. But trying to take too big a step too fast can leave you feeling discouraged, and make it more likely that you will give up. So, for example, resolving to visit 3 new countries a month might not be realistic, but starting by booking a trip to somewhere you’ve never been before may be.
Step 4: Don’t be too hard on yourself
Just because you skip a run one morning in favour of a lie-in, or you eat that last slice of cake, doesn’t mean you’ve failed. You’re still on your way to being the ‘you’ you want to be. Just picture how great you’ll feel when you finally reach your goal... time to set another one! Marathon, anyone?
